On March 28, 2025, Lucy Dacus released her fourth solo album, Forever is a Feeling, and I am forever changed by it. This album is very different than her previous indie pop records. Forever is a Feeling embraces a whimsical, acoustic vibe and explores themes of queer love, honesty, yearning, and devotion. It includes 13 tracks on the original album, and 21 on the deluxe edition, called The Archives. Looking at the album title, you can understand the raw emotions it presents. “Forever is an intense feeling that passes, but in the moment, it feels like it’s forever,” Dacus explains in an interview.
My favorite track is “Lost Time,” the final song on the record. At its core, it is a song about regret, hesitating to admit your feelings, and confessions of adoration. Dacus expresses a deep longing for more time with her partner and wishes to make up for the time that was lost. It begins soft and slow, mirroring time spent hesitating. Then, during the bridge of the song, drums crash in, and the song transforms into a cathartic release. This reflects what Dacus describes as “knocking down your door, because I’m trying to make up for lost time.” In the extended version of the song, the bridge is about a minute and thirty seconds long and is pure perfection. Dacus spends this time listing little things she loves about her partner, her voice blending with the percussion in such a rush of emotion that even a listener can feel. It is the perfect close to the album, tying all of the songs together and giving a true sense of closure.
Overall, this album is an emotional rollercoaster, but a beautifully composed 11/10. Dacus has a way of writing that I have never seen before, but I appreciate beyond words. The way she writes is so deeply honest and raw that it feels like she wrote the songs for me specifically. I hate to be dramatic, but this album truly did change my life.
